Lake George Elementary School uses a comprehensive balanced approach to literacy learning that rests on three pillars: Reading, Writing, and Word Study. Balanced literacy includes the five essential components of a robust reading program: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency and expressiveness, vocabulary and comprehension. Research and years of successful classroom experience tell us that there are effective teaching practices that help all students become capable readers, writers, and speakers. This means that your child will be receiving instruction that incorporates read aloud, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading. In writing instruction, your child will learn a process-writing approach that starts in kindergarten with shared, interactive, and independent writing, and continues throughout the grades in a variety of genres.

Balanced literacy incorporates:
- A balanced approach to combining whole-class and small group instruction on a daily basis
- Ongoing assessment to inform instruction in all areas of balanced literacy
- Daily opportunities for students to read on-level text
- Scaffolded instruction for all students with a gradual release of responsibility from teacher to student—teaching for independence
- Explicitly modeled demonstrations of reading strategy instruction
- Opportunities for students to collaborate and talk about their learning
- Reading skills and strategies taught in the context of real reading
- Time to practice skills using the core classroom libraries to read and write about topics of interest and at their reading level
- Knowledge and skill building throughout the grades in reading and writing in a variety of genres and in reading books of greater complexity
